- Alan Birch
Alan is the Chief Executive of the Semperian Group. Alan has been with the business since 2004 and established the asset management capability of Semperian. In 2007 Alan became the Chief Operating Officer and merged the asset and fund management divisions into an integrated business that formed Semperian.
Alan has a broad range of experience through a progressive career in the PFI Sector having been a commercial director since 1995 operating in the Construction and Facilities Management sector. Alan switched focus in 1999 and through a series of transactions he gained experience of the financial environment and joined a finance boutique operating in the PFI sector where he raised and transacted £2.2bn of PFI transactions including refinancing and restructuring of PFI and fund arrangements.
Alan is known for his experience of resolving complex issues and management of change and has successfully guided Semperian through its growth and establishment as an integrated infrastructure manager.
- Chief Investment Officer
- Andrew Rhodes
Andrew is the Chief Investment Officer responsible for investment evaluation and performance monitoring. He has worked as a project finance specialist for 20 years, focusing on Private Finance Initiative (PFI) projects in the UK, and with a background in major energy, water and infrastructure projects in developing and developed countries.
Andrew joined Semperian (from its inception as SMIF) in November 2003, after having worked for HSBC, Abbey National Treasury Services and the European Union.
Andrew has undertaken equity fund raising, portfolio leverage and project acquisitions, whilst in addition, focusing on financial modelling, cost benefit analyses, comparative advantage studies, tariff analyses and policy evaluation.
Transaction highlights include raising a £1.3bn leverage fund that acquired over 100 PFI assets, plus more widely the A$5.6 billion Sydney Airport privatisation in Australia, the acquisition of Portsmouth Water in the UK and the refinancing of the M40 motorway. Andrew is a registered as a General Representative with the SFA.
- Group Finance Director
- Jonathan Simpson
Jonathan joined the business in the summer of 2011 as Group Financial Controller and has a number of responsibilities including reporting and managing the Group’s annual financial performance, operating the internal control, risk monitoring and financial compliance processes and development of the business’s finance systems and accounting policies.
Jonathan brings valuable experience gained from working in senior finance positions and directorate roles with a number of listed and private companies connected with the PFI, Asset and Fund Management, Construction and Engineering sectors.
Prior to moving into commerce in 2002, he worked at KPMG where he qualified as an accountant. He holds a FCCA (Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) qualification and a BSc Hons in Chemistry from Imperial College, London.
- Group Operations Director
- Stephen Hornby
Stephen has been with the business since April 2005 and has successfully integrated a number of large acquisitions into one cohesive asset management business with over 70 staff. He is Semperian’s Director responsible for health & safety. Stephen has extensive experience in the industry and has spent the past 14 years working exclusively in PFI, including a number of successful turnaround situations. Prior to his involvement in PFI, Stephen was a partner with EC Harris, and before joining EC Harris was a Director of Schal’s project management business. He is a Member of the Association for Project Management and a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
- Group Commercial Director
- Terry Ryan
Terry joined the Asset Management business in 2005 and prior to Semperian was commercial director of Trillium's PPP Asset Management division. In addition to resolution of the larger more protracted commercial issues including disputes resolution and contractual transactions Terry’s remit includes management of a team employed to oversee larger variations, life cycle, change delivery and has recently taken over responsibility for Semperian’s corporate insurances and its portfolio of project policies covering over 70 Project Companies.
Prior to 2005 Terry held a number of operational and commercial roles as a consultant and within Vinci including Group Commercial Director and Managing Director of the Engineering division.
Terry is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and a Member of the Institute of Arbitrators.
- Group Company Secretary
- Mike Saunders
Mike is Head of Secretariat and he joined Semperian in April 2013. He has overall responsibility for the provision of company secretarial services to the Group and he and his team support the PFI project companies.
Mike is a qualified and experienced chartered secretary. He has extensive experience of legal and company secretarial matters most recently within PFI and he has worked on complex corporate structures for different Fund portfolios, including acquisitions, mergers and disposals. As a Company Secretary, during his career, Mike has also worked in Construction in the UK and Overseas, for a major Re-insurance Trade Association in the City and in Manufacturing, and gained in- depth knowledge of insurance, pensions and property matters, and provided company secretarial support to a number of small charities.
Prior to joining Semperian Mike was Company Secretary at PFI Asset and Fund Management Company, MAMG.
- Head of HR
- Rebecca Brunt
Becky is head of the HR department and has been with the business since October 2010. Becky’s role includes all HR responsibilities for 140 employees and her duties include administrating the Company’s pension scheme.
Becky is a HR professional with extensive experience within the PFI market. Prior to joining Semperian she spent 16 years working for an FM provider, leading a team which managed all aspects of HR management which included numerous TUPE transfers. Becky has core change management skills which are utilised to advise on Semperian’s organisation design and effectiveness.
Becky has achieved Chartered status with the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development).
- Head of IT
- Robert Harding
Robert joined Semperian in July 2013 as the Head of IT.
Semperian manages its own IT solutions directly. Robert is responsible for all IT infrastructure including telephony (mobile and landline), network circuits, cloud servers, custom software development services, users training and support. He also provides a key link from IT to the Executive Committee and the general user community.
Robert has over 17yrs experience in IT management positions running IT and outsource relationships within various institutions. He brings strong Leadership, Programme Management, Change Control and Balanced Scorecard creation skills with a proven international track record in leading transformation programmes sponsored at CIO, CEO and Board Level.
Robert is an accomplished coach and facilitator, with extensive experience of strategy development, programme design and implementation across a range of business industries.
With strong infrastructure, software development, project management and business knowledge Robert provides expertise at all stages of the project cycle. He has successfully undertaken many small to major project management roles ensuring that the right solutions are provided for clients, with emphasis on integrity, timeline and budget.
